WOD stands for "Workout of the Day." The WOD descriptions are very literal; don't read into them. If it says "squats" it means bodyweight (aka "air squats") - no added weight, unless it says back squats or front squats. A "rep" or repetition is one iteration of a movement. One bench press, one squat. A "set" is a group of reps: ex. 10 reps =10 bench presses. 3 sets is do a group of repetitions, rest, repeat, rest, repeat. So, 3 sets of 10 (reps) is 10/rest/10/rest/10. Sometimes a WOD says deadlift 3-2-2-1-1-1. This means a set of 3 reps, a set of 2 reps, another set of 2, a "set of one" aka a "single.".
Yes, the training offered by CrossFit HardCore is performed in a group setting, at pre-determined times throughout the day. Each group training class offered on a particular day and conducts the same workout of the day, or “WOD.” If you miss a morning class, you can pick up an evening class without missing a beat. Group Training Classes are infinitely scalable according to the needs, strengths, and weaknesses of each athlete. Additionally, select elements of each workout can be customized to suit the capabilities, fitness-level, or fitness goals of each attendee.

CrossFit Kids program delivers fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Healthy living requires that our kids push, pull, run, throw, climb, lift, jump, effectively and safely regardless of whether or not they play athletics. Athletics is a specialized pursuit. Our goal is to support the specialist, but reward the generalist. The CrossFit Kids program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for 4 year olds and elite high school athletes. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs. The needs of our second graders and our high school wrestler differ by degree not kind.

A 'box' is an independently-owned CrossFit affiliated gym where you will find all the equipment you need and get hands-on training from Crossfit trainers. Each box has all the equipment necessary for the range of WODs without the bells, whistles, and bicep curl bars of a regular gym.
An affiliate is a box thats officially affiliated with the Crossfit brand. In order to become an affiliate, a box must have Crossfit-certified trainers on staff. Before you decide to join a CrossFit box, you need to make certain that box is a “true” affiliate, ensuring the trainers have completed the necessary levels of certification. Unfortunately not every place that says “CrossFit” is a true affiliate.
Rx means that a workout is done as prescribed on weight and skill. So being that this is of importance to some, there is a high standard to follow. Just because you went Rx on a weight does not mean that you get to put Rx by your name. In order to perform a workout Rx you must perform each rep of the workout to competition standards using the prescribed weight. Standards include chest to the ground and full extension of arms on top for pushups, chin above the bar with full extension on bottom for pullups, below parallel at bottom and full extension of hips at top for squats, etc..
Use a weight that's manageable to you, or use a percentage of the weight prescribed. Assume the "generic" male crossfitter weighs 175 and the prescribed weight is 95 lbs. Thus, you'd pick a weight that's approximately 55% of your bodyweight.
“Scalability” is a word that you will hear frequently here at CrossFit HardCore. During each class, everyone does the same workout, but that workout will always have several scaling options. This makes it possible for all of us – with our different body types, personal goals and levels of ability – to work alongside one another safely. We motivate one another, cheer one another on, and sometimes participate in some healthy competition. But, ultimately, every workout is yours alone. Your workout = your pace.
Crossfit uses a wide variety of movements such as sprinting, rowing, jumping rope, climbing rope, flipping tires, weightlifting, carrying heavy objects, and many bodyweight exercises. A CrossFit program is sure to challenge you, despite your current athletic abilities. Specific exercises include Burpees, Double-Unders, Air / Back / Front Squats, Knees to Elbows, Pull-ups, Lunges, Rope Climb, Sumo Deadlift High Pull, Thruster, Handstand Push-up, Muscle Up, Box Jump, Snatch, Clean & Jerk, Dips, and Wallballs.
At CrossFit Hardcore we consider 'form', or the proper way to perform an exercise, the most important factor in our workouts. IEvery class is led by a certified trainer / coach who is specifically trained in the proper execution of all CrossFit exercises. Before every class our trainers gather the group and take time to review the proper form for each movement the workout consists of. Members have an opportunity to ask questions, actively participate and test the movements in a practice setting before the workout begins. Coaches also take extra time to review each member independently to make sure the movements are being completed correctly.
Although many exercises can be performed using just your bodyweight, we do use specific equipment for various exercises but you will not see machines. Equipment used includes barbells, dumbbells, gymnastic rings, pull up bars, kettlebells, medicine balls, and boxes for box jumps. Bumper plates are rubberized barbell plates that are used in conjunction with our barbells for a wide variety of lifting and pressing exercises. All equipment is provided at our locations for use of our members.
Workouts are typically short - 30 minutes or less - and intense, demanding all-out physical exertion. They combine movements and are mixed into numerous combinations to form the prescribed WOD. Our hour-long classes include a warm-up, a skill development segment, the high intensity WOD, and a period of group or individual stretching.
Individual performances on a WOD are often timed, scored or ranked to track individual progress and encourage competion. You can see how you stack up against the rest of the Crossfit world by measuring the time it takes to complete a prescribed workout. The protocol is famous for pushing athletes to race against each other and the clock. Your first goal should be to BETTER YOURSELF, we always say that “TIME” is secondary to form. Who cares if you got first but you didn’t push yourself as hard as you could have and/or your form looks like shit. So the moral to the story, is always strive to improve your technique and to raise your intensity.
At Crossfit Hardcore every session has at least one and most likely 2 certified coaches. We coach / train the same way a personal trainer does, up close and personal, ensuring proper technique and guidance. We try not to accommodate more that twelve people per class, but rest assured our coaches will provide you with safety, motivation and a shot of “intensity” that will take your fitness to a whole new level.
Burpees are a cornerstone of Crossfit workouts. Starting from standing position, athletes bend down and plant their hands, kick back into a plank position, and perform a pushup. Bring your legs back in and culminate with a slight jump and hands clapped overhead. Your feet have to leave the ground for it to be counted.
AMRAP stands for ‘As Many Rounds As Possible’ given a specific time period. Lasting 10, 20, or 30 minutes an AMRAP workout challenges athletes to complete as many rounds of a series of movements in the alloted time.
CrossFit’s strength and conditioning program as “constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement," with the goal of improving overall fitness. The more variety and creativity that are placed into the workouts, the more your body will develop and grow stronger. Variety in exercises, sets, reps, weight, rounds, etc. is the key to developing every component of physical fitness.
Functional movements are universal motor patterns that mimic human movement in every day life. Functional movements are squats, deadlifts, pushes, pulls, lunges, rotational movements. They are not single-joint movements but rather multi-joint movements. They develop core strength, nuero-response, and cardiovascular stamina. Functional training provides the body with a stimulus that is unmatched. These movements will improve the quality of life of everyone who performs them and will teach people how to move their bodies more efficiently and effectively in all life’s endeavors. From elite athletes looking to improve their performance in a particular sport to a grandmother seeking to gain strength to pick up her grandkids, functional training is the answer to improving the overall health and well being of everyone, no matter what level of fitness.
Each summer the CrossFit Games test participants with a barrage of physical challenges and workouts, ranging from swimming and running to pull-ups and handstand walks. Participants accrue points over the events, and the male and female winners are crowned World’s Fittest Man & Woman. Sectional and Regional qualifiers narrow the field before the annual Games Weekend.
The Journal is CrossFit’s internal publication featuring information on workouts, movements, inspirational stories, and news. Updated daily, the online publication charges readers $25 a year for unlimited access to research, articles, videos, and more.
Hero WODs are specialty workouts named after military servicemen, police, or firefighters who have died in the line of duty, these difficult workouts are intermittently programmed in CrossFit to provide an extra challenge and reminder of their sacrifice.
Coach Glassman, the founder and President of CrossFit explained it best. “I want to explain the workout once and then give it a name. I thought that anything that left you flat on your back, looking up at the sky asking ‘what just happened to me?’ deserved a females name. Workouts are just like storms, they wreak havoc on towns.”
Part of the crossfit philosophy includes pursuing/learning another sport or activity, and many crossfitters are also martial artists and competitive athletes in a variety of disciplines. However, if you work the WODs hard, you will find yourself at an improved level of fitness, and for lots of us, the WOD is our primary "sport." If you pursue another activity, you will need to balance your work/rest cycles and be sure to allow for recovery.
If you train the WODs hard, and eat right and get lots of sleep, you will definitely gain lean mass, lose fat, and yes, you can build muscle mass with the crossfit protocol. More specifically, the CrossFit protocol is designed to elicit a substantial neuroendocrine whollop and hence packs an anabolic punch that puts on impressive amounts of muscle though that is not our concern. Strength is. Natural bodybuilders (the natural ones that are not on steroids) never approach the mass that our ahtletes do. They don't come close. Those athletes who train for function end up with better form than those who value form over function. This is one of the beautiful ironies of training.
